Finishings

I know that a number of you know how you are going to be finishing off your pieces but I'm a little stuck on how to do that with mine. One of the reasons I'm struggling with my October piece. On my October piece one of my items is a tie pin & it sticks out the back by about 1cm. I'm actually thinking of cutting the tie clip part off & trying to stitch the pin down.

But I'm not sure how I want everything finished. As my pieces are reminders of my travels or something special for the month, I thought maybe a journal type book would be a good idea. But I've never done anything like that! How difficult would doing a book be to do for the first time?

Actually, as I'm writing this I'm also thinking that maybe I could stitch my pieces into a fabric journal. That I could see myself doing.

How are other people finishing off their pieces & is there any restrictions as to how we can finish them off?

Thanks in advance. You can see what it is I've done so far at http://cindysthreads.blogspot.com/

I am going to make a box that houses my pieces. I dont know what it will look like yet but I will just start it and see where it goes. The sky is the limit. A book would be wonderful. Just come up with an idea and go. Your work is very beautiful, each piece is so different. A pleasant surprise from one to the next. Julie

We are thinking of framing my pieces in shadow box frames. We have a wall that has sported a quilted wall hanging I made about 12 years ago that has been telling me it wants a rest . . .

I originally thought about framing my pieces, all in once frame. I am not trimming any of the excess fabric off so I guess I could start putting them into a fabric journal book & if I don't like it, go back to my frame idea.
I'm actually doing a fabric journal workshop with Pam Sussman soon so maybe that will give me the confidence to make a fabric journal! Thanks for sharing what your plans are.

I finally just decided to finish the edges with beading and make each month into a quilted/beaded wallhanging. I am sewing a little fabric sleeve on the back to hang it with a dowelling.

I think I'm going to make a wall hanging. I'm going to sew them onto a quilt and hang them on the wall. I have a place on the wall where they will look good.
Cheers, Denise

Cindy ~ I think a fabric book is a great idea. If you can see yourself doing it that way, why not? As Julie says, sky is the limit. If I had a tie clip sticking out of the back of one of my pieces, I'd probably clip it off and figure out some way to sew on the top part.

As far as what I plan to do with my pieces... Many ideas and possibilities have crossed my mind. My latest is this. I keep wanting to paint, journal and write poems on the backs of them... I'd do it on mat board and use bookbinding cement to glue the beadwork to the boards. The pieces would be individual cards, and I'd probably make a box for them. Who knows? Tomorrow I may have some other idea.
